Why Am I Running For Shawnee City Council?

I am concerned with the direction our current sitting council member, Mickey Sandifer, is taking our city and I want to build a stronger, better community.

There is no "spinning some fanciful tales". His voting record is what it is and YOU decide by clicking on the links and reading the minutes for yourself.

Fiscal Responsibility:

On May 14, 2007, my opponent voted to spend $3.5 MILLION of taxpayer
dollars for Monticello Road south. Construction began, but due to the lack of $16 million dollars to finish, the road is now in worse condition than it was and has been taken off of the CIP indefinitely. That partial construction included the moving of utility poles, cutting down trees, and now NO improvement has or will be done in the near future making the road more dangerous. Because of this vote, two families eventually lost their homes (one a historical farm home and one a custom built log home).

On April 26, 2010 my opponent voted to spend $67,500 to build a 115-foot
temporary connection
from 57th Street to Oak Valley West shopping center.

Accountability:

Since April 2004 my opponent has taken numerous non-essential trips and spent tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars on travel during tough economic times and publicly stated during the September 14, 2009 City Council Meeting that his travel is nobody’s business.

I am committed to reviewing and reducing non-essential expenditures and I believe tax dollars spent are your business!

Lower Taxes:

  • On July 12, 2004 my opponent voted to place two separate sales tax increases on the ballot.
  • On January 24, 2005 my opponent voted to extend the Parks and Pipes Sales Tax.
  • On July 24, 2006 my opponent voted to raise property tax 17% - The most in
  • Shawnee History.
  • On August 24, 2009 my opponent voted to charge residents a 5% fee on their utilities.
  • On August 8, 2011 my opponent voted to charge residents an extra 1/2% sales tax for shopping in the Ten Quivira Plaza shopping center to pay for the developers improvements.(New Minutes. Tell me these minutes are as transparent as the other links prior to his February 14, 2011 vote. YOU decide!)

I am committed to keeping taxes low because higher taxes hurt both families and businesses.

Transparency:

On February 14, 2011 my opponent voted to remove the transparency of city council business by voting to remove detailed written minutes.

I am committed to keeping city council business transparent and reinstating detailed minutes.

Less Regulations:

On January 25, 2010 my opponent voted in support of the new trash laws that includes restrictions on containers, recycling, and yard waste. This vote imposed additional cost for residents and put one hauler out of business who could not meet the new guidelines.

These are just a few of his votes that do not align with my principles of
Fiscal Responsibility
Accountability
Lower Taxes
Transparency
Less Regulations, and
Protection of Property Ownership
It's time for new and fresh ideas!

My views are more in line with those of council member Michelle Distler...not Mickey Sandifer, and I believe that she and I can work together for the betterment of not only Ward 4 residents but for the city as a whole.

I believe smaller government equates to Bigger Citizens and I want to represent YOU by protecting YOUR tax dollars and rights.

I, Dylan McAfee, ask your support to serve YOU on the Shawnee City Council. In addition to YOUR VOTE, I ask for your help in the following manner:
